High energy cost is a major concern in the operation of a water distribution network. Typically, there are many pumps in a large distribution network. Optimizing pump operation could result in significant energy saving. This project attempts to develop such a pump scheduler to help the operators select combinations of pumps to satisfy demand and optimize energy usage at the same time. The pump scheduler is built based on the historical information stored in the SCADA system. The pump selection is based on the historical patterns, selected criteria, and an overall demand forecast. The current goal is to design the pump scheduler as a stand-alone utility in Microsoft Excel, but it could also be linked to the SCADA system and the hydraulic models to operate on-line real time.
