Ultraviolet (UV) disinfection has been used in the U.S. for wastewater applications for decades. Recent developments demonstrating the effectiveness of UV for inactivation of chemical disinfectant resistant pathogens, most notably Cryptosporidium, has lead to great interest in the application of UV disinfection for treatment of surface waters. Unlike wastewater applications, where disinfection goals are generally based on average effluent quality, drinking water applicationsrequire that disinfection goals are reliably achieved at all times. In addition, drinking water treatment facilities apply chemicals not commonly used for wastewater treatment. These two issues provide the impetus to rigorously address the impact of water treatment chemicals on UV disinfection system performance and are the basis of this paper. Includes 4 references, tables, figures.
