This paper looks at the current trend of disinfection from chlorine gas to sodium hypochlorite. The motivation for the switch in disinfectants is based on a misperception of the relative safety of the two forms of chlorine. Through personal observation and published data it is demonstrated that sodium hypochlorite is no safer than chlorine gas, and unless treated as the industrial chemical that it is, there is a greater chance for mishap with sodium hypochlorite through complacency. The paper states that many plants would be better served if they did not switch from chlorine gas. Includes 9 references, figure.
