The likely proposed NDMA rule, with its maximum contaminant level (MCL) for NDMA in finished water, is expected to have a significant impact on water utilities. Because of this likely proposed rule, many utilities will be required to incorporate appropriate control technology. This article will provide drinking water utilities and professionals a comprehensive occurrence and synthesis of information pertinent to NDMA such that drinking water utilities can make informed and cost-effective decisions regarding appropriate management techniques for NDMA. Given that the current state of knowledge pertaining to occurrence and treatment of NDMA from drinking water treatment is in its infancy, the information presented in this work will be timely and will help utilities develop some confidence toward controlling NDMA during water treatment. Includes 91 references, tables.
