Although consumers traditionally link algae in drinking water with droughts and hot summer weather, water treatment facilities deal with algae throughout the year. Consequently, algae can have a drastic effect on the finished product from a water treatment facility by producing foul tastes and objectionable odors. During the summer of 1999 many utility managers were hard-pressed to find alternative water sources and were forced to implement water use restrictions in many areas of the country. Water treatment plant operators know that once the taste and odor of their customers' water becomes a concern, their water treatment facility can quickly become scrutinized. This paper discusses the performance of high rate, pulsed sludge blanket (PSB) clarification with regards to algae removal and clarification performance during algae events. Includes 2 references, figures.
