Experiments were performed to study the effects of oxidation on the natural organic matter (NOM) coating on particle surfaces, and the consequent effects on particle removal. NOM coating on particles was characterized using adsorption density and adsorbed hydrodynamic layer thickness. The effects on particle removal were characterized using attachment efficiency among particles. Results indicate that oxidation, in general, has the tendency to remove/desorb part of the NOM coating from particles. As a result, oxidation can decrease particle stability and, thereby, enhance particle removals in conventional treatment processes. Includes 5 references, table, figures.
