The City of Coquitlam is one of seventeen member municipalities supplied with drinking water by the Greater Vancouver Regional District (GVRD). Changes to the regional water system over the last several years include a new ozone treatment facility, corrosioncontrol, rechlorination and other distribution system improvements. Of significance are key distribution system issues related to chlorine residuals, bacterial regrowth, and disinfection byproducts. In September 2000, the City of Coquitlam issued a boil water advisory within the Westwood Plateau community in response to excessive regrowth. The cause of regrowth during this period could not be attributed to one particular source, and it was determined that a combination of conditions provided an environment that was conducive to bacterial regrowth. The cooperative working relationship between the City and the GVRD is highlighted through the management of this event and other water quality issues. Includes 7 references, tables, figures.
