This paper gives a brief overview of the historical events that have lead to the investigation of proposed upgrades to the Mannheim WTP, and highlights the results of the justification and preliminary design components of the project. This paper focuses primarily on the design, implementation, as well as O&M considerations of the proposed ultraviolet (UV) and ozone systems and includes the status of several outstanding research issues that could impact the design and approvability of UV irradiation for drinking water applications, the proposed retrofit of the UV system, control practices and methodologies, as well as conceptual level costing. This paper will be beneficial to those that are involved in the design, integration and operation of similar multiple barrier treatment strategies for microbial control within the drinking water treatment industry.
