This paper summarizes potential impacts of regulatory requirements on the design and operation of ultraviolet (UV) disinfection facilities. In November 2001, US Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) published a pre-proposal draft of the Long Term 2 Enhanced Surface Water Treatment Rule (LT2ESWTR), including requirements pertaining to UV disinfection. These requirements may affect major design and operational aspects of UV disinfection facilities, specifically including water quality monitoring, placement of UV systems in the water treatment plant, hydraulic analysis, electric power design, monitoring, and maintenance. Although the draft LT2ESWTR requirements may change, foreknowledge of the requirements can help utilities begin planning and design of UV facilities. Includes 9 references, tables, figures.
