Twelve different waters from filtered water utilities across the United States were collected and evaluated for UV disinfection of MS2 coliphage under a single bench scale inactivation and microbial analysis protocol. The average and 95 percent confidence interval for log survival as a function of UV dose for the MS2 coliphage tested in these filtered water utilities was found to lie within the guidelines proposed by the NWRI for bench scale UV disinfection studies. The inactivation of MS2 was not affected by turbidity, particle count, or UV absorbance within the bounds of these waters in compliance with regulations for filtered water utilities. From these results, it appears that treated water from filtered utilities in compliance with federal standards for water quality are readily amenable to UV treatment for disinfection. In addition, the validation of UV disinfection systems as it relates to water quality may not need to be site specific aside from accounting for water quality parameters that directly affect the UV disinfection process such as UV absorbance.
