An increasingly important aspect of providing water quality information to consumers is the ability to provide this information in real time. Real time monitoring and reporting of water quality data for a distribution system can be accomplished by utilizing continuous on-line monitoring instrumentation that integrates and displays remotely sensed data and interfaces with a variety of applications. As part of the US Environmental Protection Agency Environmental Monitoring for Public Access and Community Tracking (EMPACT) project, Tucson Water has successfully integrated multiple water quality data sets from several data management and acquisition systems with a geographical information system (GIS) mapping application. The goal of the integration of the data sets and the interactive maps was to display the data in real time from twenty-two remote locations that are strategically located throughout Tucson Water's major distribution system and the most recent data from over four hundred sampling locations situated in neighborhoods. To accomplish this goal a two-map service structure was designed using ArcXML, Java, JavaScript, HTML, Oracle SQL and the Python scripting language. In addition, a third map service was created to better navigate the map web pages. The paper includes a graphical depiction and a brief overview of the web site structure. Includes 2 references, figure.
