United Water Idaho operates a number of wells to provide drinking water to the greater Boisearea. The Swift wells are located in an area of the distribution system which cannot be servedby other wells or sources. However, the well water contains a number of constituents whichhave resulted in consumer complaints. Therefore, these wells are typically only operated duringperiods of high demand, usually in the summer (for 6 to 8 weeks). The main water quality issuesfor these wells include manganese (and some iron), the presence of the taste-and-odor causingcompounds, MIB and geosmin, ammonia, hydrogen sulfide, and tetrachloroethylene. In order toproduce regulatory compliant and aesthetically pleasing water, the Swift wells require extensivetreatment. Two trains were identified to meet the finished water quality goals established for thisproject. The alternative treatment trains were evaluated in terms of process considerations, capital costs, and operation and maintenance costs. Includes tables, figures.
