The City of Sioux City and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) entered intoan agreement in the spring of 2000 to evaluate the effectiveness of the Sioux City watertreatment system in particle filtration. This system includes not only the filtration processeswithin the treatment plant, but filtration by sediments underlying and adjacent to theMissouri River. Quantifying the effectiveness could reduce filtration requirements withinthe city's treatment process and ultimately reduce construction, operation, andmaintenance costs for treatment plant upgrades. This project entailed a ten-month-long study completed in June 2001 of ground andsurface water sampling and water quality testing at seven sampling locations within themulti-well system. The seven sampling points include the Missouri River; a collector wellwithin the city's Riverfront Wellfield; three of the collector well's laterals screened in theMissouri River alluvium; raw water consisting of water derived from all wells within theRiverfront Wellfield (also screened within Missouri River alluvium); and, finished water. Includes table.
