In 1997, The Town of Highland Park, Texas completed a SewerSystem Evaluation Study (SSES) on theeastside wastewater collection system.Recommended improvements from the studywere incorporated into a five-yearrehabilitation program. A portion of theplanned sewer line replacements is locatedwithin the same easements that the water linesoccupy. The need to replace the water linesdue to condition, as well as to increase thesize from 6-inches to 8-inches, was addressedby inclusion of the water main replacementswith the sewer replacement projects.Earlier construction in similar easementsusing open cut methods resulted in highconstruction costs and lengthy, disruptiveconstruction periods. In other areas of the Town, trenchless technology has been usedsuccessfully to replace sewer lines. Why not consider using the same technology to replace thewater? The Town believed if the contractor were to replace the water using trenchless methods, the disruption would be minimal, and access would be less of a factor in the construction costs.Once the decision was made to consider trenchless methods as a construction alternative to opencut, the next step was to evaluate the types of trenchless systems that were available for waterreplacement that have been successfully used for installation runs of at least 700 linear feet. This paper discusses pipe bursting, horizontal directional drilling, and project construction. Includes figures.
