The use of polyethylene pipe in potablewater distribution has grown considerablyover the past thirty years on both a domestic(North American) and international (Global)basis. Factors driving this growth haveincluded material improvements, standardsdevelopment, expansion of innovativeconstruction techniques and growingconcerns over the integrity of an aginginternational infrastructure. This paper presents some specific case studies on the useof high density polyethylene pipe (HDPE) inpotable water distribution in both NorthAmerica and in the international community.Specific factors relating to each project suchas design considerations, constructiontechniques, and/or overall system costs are examined to provide an understanding asto the engineering basis by which HDPEpipe was specified or selected. Includes 12 references, figures.
