The Township of Sparta, New Jersey owns and operates two small capacity well fields(nominal 130 gpm) with radon levels ranging as high as 50,000 picocuries per liter(pCi/L). The proposed Radon Rule will allow a maximum concentration of 4,000 pCi/L.Although the Rule is not expected to be finalized until the end of 2004, and will likely notbecome effective until 2007, the Township proceeded with the installation of radonremoval treatment facilities in advance of the regulations. This paper presents an overview of radon in terms of itsproperties, regulatory status, andtreatment technologies. The paper discusses the key design aspects that include:pilot testing;cost/benefit analysis for different design configurations; and, cost estimates for implementation.
