In a recently completed project, a comprehensive geographic information system (GIS)database, or geodatabase, was developed for the Cleveland Water Division (CWD) tomanage data related to its water distribution system and related facilities. The primaryfunction of this geodatabase is to store data for use in hydraulic and water quality modelsof the system. In addition, the geodatabase stores information related to the operationsand maintenance of the distribution system. This GIS serves many diverse functionswithin CWD including plan review, maintenance records, work order management andadvanced planning and engineering. Execution of the project involved developing anumber of applications for inputting and managing field data within the geodatabase.Specific examples include linking data from CWD's supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system with either the GISor hydraulic models, developing custom forms for input of customer complaints into theGIS, and integrating chlorine residual field data collected for calibration of the waterquality model with data collected by CWD for compliance with the state and federalreporting requirements.
