Since 1994, the Carmel Area Wastewater District (CAWD), the Pebble Beach CommunityServices District (PBCSD), and the Pebble Beach Company (PBCo) have been operating theirWater Reclamation Project for the treatment and delivery of recycled water to seven world-classgolf courses in Pebble Beach, California. The Water Reclamation Project saves an average of650 acre-feet per year of potable water. However, the original project goal of eliminating the useof potable water for golf course irrigation has not been achieved for two principle reasons:during the irrigation season, the daily golf course demand irrigation regularly exceeds thewastewater supply that is treated through the recycled water treatment facilities; and, golf course greens and fairways are flushed with potable water to reduce the negativeimpact on turf grass quality from sodium and salts in the recycled water.Eliminating the use of potable water at the golf courses continues to be the objective for theWater Reclamation Project. CAWD, PBCSD, and PBCo are implementing the SalinityManagement Project to address recycled water quality and quantity problems. PBCo and PBCSDare developing a project for year-round storage of recycled water in a reservoir to address therecycled water supply problem. After evaluating several alternatives to resolve the WaterReclamation Project water quality problems, PBCo and CAWD are proceeding with theimplementation of recycled water desalination treatment facilities consisting of amicrofiltration/reverse osmosis membrane treatment process. Includes tables, figures.
