Like many governmental agencies and private businesses, Anchorage Water andWastewater Utility (AWWU) faces the need to operate with fewer resources and at thesame time meet the public demand for better service. In addition, AWWU must respondto federal mandates to meet safe drinking water and wastewater discharge requirements, meet employee safety standards, and maintain an aging infrastructure.AWWU has recognized that technology is a key resource in supporting these objectivesand believes that a sound, utility-wide information technology (IT) strategy will providethe leverage needed to meet these business goals. This case study will provide a utilityperspective about how IT planning has evolved at AWWU. The utility will share theirperspectives, lessons learned, and next steps. The following topics are addressed:utility background information;why and when the utility started an IT planning program, and their goals;how the utility evolved to their current IT planning methodology;the current IT planning methodology in use;the most successful elements of that planning process; and, lessons learned.
