Metropolitan Water District of Southern California (Metropolitan) comparedexperimental and modeled disinfection performance of a large-scale ultraviolet(UV) disinfection reactor using computational fluid dynamics and irradiance (CFD-i)modeling software. The UV reactor consisted of four, 4-kW lamps mountedperpendicular to flow in a 24-inch diameter reactor at treating 3 million gallons perday (MGD). Validation testing of this reactor was conducted with MS-2 coliphage.Validation tests presented in this paper were conducted with water produced from aconventional treatment plant operating with ozone and biological filtration. Three-dimensionalCFD-i modeling of the polychromatic system operating under designconditions (three lamps on, one standby), and using either particle tracking orscalar transport based modeling techniques, predicted MS-2 inactivation within0.1 log10 of validation results. Future work will develop CFD-I based tools to assistengineers in the design of large UV treatment systems (>500 MGD) for disinfectionof filtered surface water. Future work will also investigate the ability of CFD-imodeling to predict disinfection effectiveness under adverse hydrodynamic andwater quality conditions. Includes 17 references, tables, figures.
