The San Francisco Department of Public Health (SFDPH), Environmental Health Sectionparticipates in a unique collaboration with the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission(SFPUC) Water Quality Bureau to ensure a safe drinking water supply for the 2.4 millionpeople in the Bay Area served by SFPUC water. This collaboration is an example of publichealth specialists, water quality engineers, and public utility personnel working together toprovide safe drinking water. This collaboration involves maintaining current high qualitywater supplies by addressing drinking water issues from the public health perspective.Collaborative activities include the following: research projects, public health educationabout water quality issues, regulatory support, emergency preparedness assistance and waterborne disease surveillance, and cross connection control.
