This slide presentation outlines a project to treat waste filter backwash and sedimentation/coagulation sludges to meet NPDES permit limits at one of Detroit's water treatment plants (WTPs). Project drivers included:need to increase state approved plantcapacity rating from 300 mgd to 400mgd; change to Modified Direct FiltrationOperation;MDEQ concerns over recycle ofcontaminants through waste backwash water; and, improved raw water quality byeliminating recycled filter backwashwater. Design challenges included:meet DWSD's requirements for fail safeoperation/redundancy;design and construct a low maintenancefacility that essentially runs itself, so staff canfocus more on treating drinking water thanwastewater; and, regulatory agency reviewing project as adrinking water facility rather than thewastewater project. Beneficial features included:reduced solids loading tosedimentation basins resulting in lessmaterial to manually clean (O&M CostSavings);simple, easy to operate system;redundancy; and, fail safe operation. Includes figures.
