The goal of this slide presentation was to provide an overview of recent Canadian-ledresearch activities related to distributionsystems, including:Anti-Microbial Resistance of Escherichia coli andOpportunistic Pathogens in Distribution Systems(AwwaRF 3087);Strategy to manage and Respond to Total Coliforms andE. coli in the Distribution Systems (AwwaRF 3116); and, protecting the Integrity of Drinking Water DistributionSystems (CWN Project). AwwaRF 3087Project Objectives were:to examine the effects of UV disinfection incombination with chemical disinfectants on E.coli and heterotrophic bacteria in model drinkingwater distribution systems;to examine the effects of UV disinfection incombination with chemical disinfectants on E.coli and heterotrophic bacteria in model drinkingwater distribution systems; and, tounderstand the phenotypicchanges of E. Coli in distributionsystems as they relate todisinfection conditions and pipematerial. The technical approach used: annular reactors (ARs) tosimulate conditions and model pathogensin drinking water distribution systems. An example operation of two ARs is outlined along with API test results. Preliminary conclusions(AwwaRF 3087) included:UV treatment had little effect on growth of biofilm HPCbacteria;no significant difference between pre and post UVtreatment;biofilm HPCs unaffected by disinfection in CI ARs;suspended HPCs best inactivated in PC ARs; and,CI ARs supported an order of magnitude higher ofbiofilm HPCs over PC ARs. Includes tables, figures.
