This slide presentation outlines a study on marine phytoplankton and domoic acid occurrence and removal for the seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) treatment process, using 2005 monitoring data for El Segundo, California. Several toxin producers were observed and blooms were frequent and prolonged.A table of comparative lethality of selected toxins and chemical agents in laboratory mice is provided, along with a table of water purification methods effective against toxins. West Basin monitoringat the desal pilot site included: raw water phytoplankton and speciation; and,raw water and RO permeate domoic acid concentrations.Up to 2 ug/L of Domoic Acid was detected in raw seawater. Results indicated non-detectin RO permeate for all samples. Includes tables, figures.
