This powerpoint presentation defines workforce planning as, "the strategic alignment of an organization'shuman capital with its business direction. Itis a methodical process of analyzing thecurrent workforce, identifying futureworkforce needs, establishing the gapbetween the present and future, andimplementing solutions so the organizationcan accomplish its mission, goals, andobjectives" (IPMA, 2002). The presentation then outlines a systematic approach to workforce analysis by addressing thecoming challenges through rightsizing, recruiting, retaining,planning, and managing theknowledge of its workforce. The approach has three components: workforce approach to Examine current workforce andoccupations and project the number and characteristicsof the jobs and number of employees needed; workload approach to define the amount and type ofwork anticipated at a specific point in the future and use this to project the people and skills needed; and, competency approach to identify sets of competenciesaligned with mission, vision, and strategic goals. Thisapproach assumes the workforce and workloadrequirements have already been defined. Other approach elements include: identify key players; conduct scan; assess data; identify occupations needed; identify positions needed; identify skills and competencies; identify skills and competency levels; identify staffing and training needed; examine staffing levels; and, identify training needed.
