This powerpoint presentation lists the challenges faced by small water systems as: water is vulnerable to microbial contaminationbecause source protection is difficult;part-time operators with insufficient training in newtechnologies are common;lack of clear documented operating, maintenanceand response plans; and, disinfection byproducts caused by interaction oforganics and chlorine. Biological threats to small systems include: bacterial pathogens shigella, salmonella, E.coli that can causediarrheal disease;Protozoal threats of Giardia and Cryptosporidium that causediseases and are very hardy in the environment; and,Natural Water Problems ofiron, radon, manganese, hydrogen sulfide, organics, hardness. Factors for improving Smaller Water Systems include: full water sampling and analysis required; data analysis and conceptual design factors; develop a full Process and Instrumentation Diagram; proposal with budget pricing; final design drawings; manufacturedtypicalsmall UVDisinfectionSystem - NSF120 USGPM; manufacturedsmallmunicipalUV disinfectionsystem3rd Party Validated300 USgpm; manufacturedControl andMonitoringPanel -Switches andLED Alarmswith HMI; Commissioning; training; research needs; package plants; and, membrane filtration.
