The objectives of this powerpoint presentation were: to formulate a surface complexation modelto simultaneously predict natural organic matter (NOM)sorption and particle stability; and, to calibrate the proposed model with datafrom AWWA's Enhanced Coagulation andSoftening Database. The presentation outlines the modeling approach, including: Overview of the Diffuse Layer Model (DLM); reactions of NOM; calibration data; surface complexation reactions; and, model parameters. Results are presented, along with conclusions that include: DLM provides excellent prediction of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) removalfor seven source waters;surface potential prediction requires considerationof other potential-determining ions (e.g., Ca2+,CO32-, SO42-);best model fits were obtained for waters with lowand moderate alkalinity, further research isneeded to improve model for high-alkalinity waters; and,the DLM yields practical information that can beused to optimize treatment.
