This powerpoint presentation begins by providing a brief overview of the city of Durham, Ontario, Canada and Durham's water and energyefficient community. A sub-metering study is presented, including project costs for appliance, landscape, and toilet upgrades. Results are presented in terms of water savings, electricity use, and natural gas savings. Creating a template to quantify water and electricityuse in the future is presented. A copy of the Region of Durham Efficient Community Interim Report, May 4, 2007, is provided. Durham Region, in conjunction with Tribute Communities, Natural Resources Canada(NRCan) and the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM), has offered persons buyingnew homes in a designated community at Audley and Taunton Roads in Ajax, Ontario, ahigh-efficiency upgrade option. This upgrade includes efficient plumbing fixtures (toiletsand showerheads), ENERGY STAR® appliances (refrigerators, washing machines, clothesdryers, dishwashers, and stoves), and landscape packages that are expected to require lesswater and less energy.Ninety-one homes received the upgrade, on a first-come-first-served basis. The goal of thisproject is to compare the energy and water demands of these upgraded homes (Study Group)with those of another group of eighty-five non-upgraded homes (Control Group) in the samesubdivision. The hydro, water, and gas meters are being read for all 176 homes on a semi-monthlybasis for an entire year. Also, in both areas a sub-group of 10 homes have had sub-metersinstalled on the various energy and water using appliances and fixtures identifiedabove. While overall water and energy savings related to the installation of the upgradedfixtures and appliances will be identified by comparing the Control and Study demands of thelarge number of non-sub-metered homes, the savings related to individual fixtures andappliances will be identified based on the data collected in the sub-metered homes.
