This powerpoint presentation begins by providing characteristics of pathogens, and then lists issues with pathogens that include: trapping and retention of organisms from contamination events;growth of opportunistic pathogens; potential for release; less susceptible to disinfection; pathogens in amoeba; possibility that there may beinhibition (good thing) fromindigenous organisms; and, detection can be problematic. Newer experimental methods are presented and include the following:use of molecular methods; preferentialdetection of "live" cells; and, microscopy to detect colonization andpersistence. Presentation summary includes: pathogens are integrated into biofilms;ability to grow and/or persist dependson organism and environmentalconditions; and, better tools are needed to detect themin distribution systems. Includes figures.
