This powerpoint presentation begins by providing a brief overview of the Cedar RapidsWater Department goals and the water system. The issue of ammonia in the source water and virus disinfection is presented, along with the long chloramine contact time required forvirus CT, the benefits of ultraviolet (UV) disinfection, UV design criteria and procurement process, equipment and operating characteristics, UV dose requirements, project costs, and cost estimates for smallergroundwater systems. Presentation conclusions indicate that: UV can be an economical option for virusinactivation despite higher UV doses;UV provides superior disinfection capabilityversus chlorine with no disinfection byproduct (DBP) issues;UV system can be designed to easily meetmore stringent future regulations;UV can be an economical option for virusinactivation despite higher UV doses;UV provides superior disinfection capabilityversus chlorine with no DBP issues; and,UV system can be designed.
