This powerpoint presentation begins by providing a brief overview of the formation and fate of chlorinatedpharmaceutically active compounds duringwastewater disinfection in Canada. Research objectives included the following: investigate the kinetics of degradation forselected PhACs when reacted with chlorine inpure water samples;determine kinetics of formation of byproducts; and, investigate PhAC degradation and byproductformation in actual wastewater samples. Presentation summary includes the following:potential for chlorinated byproduct formation exists due tocurrent disinfection strategies;experiments in lab water show pseudo-first order kineticsfor Gemfibrozil, Naproxen, Diclofenac, and Ibuprofen;chlorinated gemfibrozil byproducts formed by zero orderkinetics with respect to themselves, generally fit model forparallel reactions;wastewater trials to date show degradation of Gemfibrozil, but no formation of byproducts; and,to date, no toxicity data exists on chlorinated byproducts. Includes tables, figures.
