This powerpoint presentation begins by providing a brief overview of disinfection, nitrification, and lead corrosion. Research objectives included the following: evaluate the effect of nitrification products, nitrate and nitrite on lead leaching; and, elucidate the biological mechanisms thatcontribute to lead corrosion. The experimental setup is provided, and presentation conclusions indicate the following: the products of nitrification, particularly nitrate, may cause significant lead corrosion in drinkingwater systems;more importantly, nitrate facilitates lead corrosionby attacking the protective film formed on leadsurfaces in tap water; and,the presence of nitrifying bacteria become directlyinvolved in lead corrosion by providing analternative electron acceptor, for the oxidativedissolution of lead. Includes table, figures.
