This powerpoint presentation begins by providing a brief overview of a desalination plant project located in Santa Cruz, California. An overview of the pilot plant is provided, along with a "no chemical" pretreatment alternative, the pilot plant treatment process diagram, ultraviolet (UV) and ClO<sub>2</sub> as viable biofoulingcontrol strategies for seawater desalination, steps to evaluate UV, and chloramines/chlorine dioxide for RO biofouling control. Lessons learned for ClO<sub>2</sub> additiononto polyamide RO membranes include the following:higher tolerance than for free chlorine in general;purity - ClO<sub>2</sub> must be chlorine free;1 ppm or less in RO feedwater; 1-4 hours istypically suitable to disinfect a system;low iron content is key as it acts as a catalyst formembrane degradation;pH influences degradation rate - lower is better; and, membrane surface chemistry may influencedegradation rate.
