The objective of this study was tocomprehensively characterize the dissolved organic matter (DOM) size and polarity of the four Fort Collins, Colorado, water sourcesto help select the most appropriate mixture of water sources during the low and high flowregimes, thereby reducing disinfection byproducts (DBP) during treatment. For this purpose therelationship between DOM size and Total Trihalomethane Formation Potential (TTHMFP) wasalso studied. Based on these findings, water source selection recommendations were made forlow and high flow conditions of the four water sources for the city of Fort Collins, Colorado tominimize TTHMFP during treatment. To accomplish the study's objective, DOM was characterized in water sources both spatially andtemporally by the traditional parameters of dissolved organic carbon (DOC), ultravioletabsorbance (UV) and specific UV absorbance (SUVA), as well as by size (ultrafiltration) andpolarity (polarity rapid assessment method (PRAM) at natural pH. (Rosario-Ortiz, 2007). Threetime periods during 2008 were studied. Includes 6 references, figures.
