This powerpoint presentation begins by providing study objectives: to characterize presence of contaminants of emerging concern(CECs) including pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs),endocrine disruptor chemicals (EDCs) and synthetic organiccompounds (SOCs) in Lake Erie source water; to gain understanding of the impact of Kettle Creek Watershed onthe Elgin Area Water Supply System with respect to CECs; and,to develop an approach to determining the treatment efficacy usingbench and pilot methods for the Elgin Area and West Elgin WaterTreatment Plants. A brief overview of the City of London - Elgin Area Water Supply System is presented, along with the study approach in three phases: Phase I - identification of emergingcontaminants of concern; Phase II - determining current laboratorycapabilities and associated cost, and preliminary testing for identifiedECCs in source water; and, Phase III - determination of treatmentefficacy. Presentation summary includes: no regulated compounds detected above acceptableconcentration level;no pharmaceuticals or EDCs were detected aboveMDLs in first round of sampling at EAWSS or WEWTPby ALS Laboratories (MDL range: 20 to 100 ng/L), low levels of atrazine were detected in Lake Erie and lowlevels of NDMA were detected in Kettle Creek; and,the second round of testing detected very low levels ofmetformin, caffeine, carbamazepine, erythromycin andsulfamethoxazole and several EDCs in Lake Erie. Includes figures.
