This powerpoint presentation begins by presenting the research objective: to determine if the levels of earthyand musty odors in variouswaters are dependent on thebackground water matrix and/orthe presence of chlorine orchloramines. The experimental design included the following:6 water sources;16 water samples by 8 different protocols =128 FPA analyses;used Flavor Panel Analysis to detect odorsChlorine, Earthy, Musty and Earthy/Musty; and,Experimental Factors includeddechlorination (Treatment),MIB contaminant addition, andGeosmin contaminant addition. A statistical model is presented, along with fixed effects for: total chlorine odor; Earthy Odor - (Geosmin = 20.1 - 61.9 ng/L); Musty Odor (MIB = 18.6 ng/L); (Geosmin= 20.1-61.9 ng/L) & (MIB = 18.6)ng/L) - (MIB = Musty Odor). Conclusions indicate that: there are significant statistical resultsshowing MASKING of Earthy Odorsbetween Chlorine and Geosmin at drinkingwater levels (20.1 - 61.9ng/L);Chlorine hides the earthy odor.masking of Musty Odors were notsignificant with this experimentaldesign at drinking water levels (18.6 ng/L); and,use other measurements of odor panelevaluation that have less errors of analysis. Includes tables, figures.
