This powerpoint presentation begins by providing a brief overview of Long Beach Water Department's (LBWD's) Seawater DesalinationProgram. Research project objectives include: determine the maximum sustainableintake filtration and discharge rate; and, evaluate seasonal water qualityimpacts on the quantity and quality, and determine if further treatment isneeded (i.e. microfiltration). LBWD's research approach included:Pilot Testing (2008);Demonstration Scale(2008-2010); and, Production Plant (~2015). Research sites include a demonstration facility and a pilot testing facility. Initial data analysis of systemflows demonstrates that the lowerfiltration rate of 0.05 gpm/ft2 andthe intermediate filtration rate of0.1 gpm/ft2 show no significanttidal influence on production. The secondary goal of water quality cartridgefiltration system of 100 mmand 5 mm filters improves theturbidity and SDI effluent to acomparable level as the MF effluent.Discharge from system is showing noimpacts from tide conditions orplugging. Includes table, figures.
