Given changes in regulations for volatile and semivolatile organic contaminants in drinking water, it is of interest to know how their granular activated carbon (GAC) adsorption capacities vary with temperature. This work presents experimental results for adsorption of chloroform, trichloroethylene (TCE), atrazine, and 2,4-dichlorophenoxy acetic acid (2,4-D) to Calgon F300 between 5 and 42 degrees C. Data were interpreted using Freundlich and Langmuir expressions for adsorption capacity as a function of aqueous phase concentration and using the Polanyi-Manes adsorption potential theory to obtain thermodynamic insight into differences in the effect of temperature on GAC adsorption. The results are used to predict the effect of seasonal temperature variations on adsorption capacities in a GAC plant column, which was operated for 224 days with continuous input of the four target compounds.
