The objectives of this study were to develop, assess, and demonstrate a nonsite-specific system for the determination of the biodegradable dissolved organic carbon (BDOC) concentration in drinking water and to show applications to samples from several treatment plants. An important objective was to determine the impact of the biofilm source on the BDOC results. The recirculating biofilter method was shown to be reliable and reproducible method for assessing BDOC above 0.1 mg/L. Ozone increased biodegradability by 20-30 percent; this indicates that effective BDOC removal is possible by certain treatment processes.
