The Board of Water and Light (Lansing, Michigan) has instituted a program called "Share the Success" that consists of a set of organization performance standards and a supplemental compensation plan that rewards employees with cash or benefit options. The performance standards are detailed in this paper. They cover four broad areas including cost of service, quality and reliability, promoting a positive public image, and employee productivity. Each performance standard is weighted and points are assigned to goals. Payment is on a sliding scale with the number of points achieved: 375 points translates to a 3.75 percent bonus for each employee. Employees can use their payments for long term disability, universal life insurance, purchased vacation, deferred cash payment, vision insurance, or other options.
