The objective of this study was to examine methods of reducing the formation of DBPs as measured by total organic halide (TOX) and purgeable organic halide (POX). The study was divided into two phases. In Phase I, the impact of ozonation, as a pretreatment prior to chlorine or chloramine disinfection, on the kinetics and extent of organic halide formation was investigated. In Phase II, the effect of preozonation and biodegradation on the reduction of DBPs formed by chlorination or chloramination was examined.
