This paper presents an overview of water quality modeling in a distribution system. Five general types of models are defined and discussed: hydraulic models, steady state water quality models and flow tracing models, dynamic water quality models, optimization models, and analysis/display models. These models have a number of applications: water quality studies, calibration, and model investigations. As a relatively new technology, the potential implications are not well defined, but may include: the regulatory process, distribution system monitoring strategies, legal proceedings, management and operation, design and operation of storage facilities, and health effects; some specific implications are given for each type. Research needs range from a better understanding of the physical, chemical, and biological processes to development of technology transfer.
