South Florida water supplies are groundwater with high hardness and color. The common treatment for these waters was lime softening followed by chlorine bleaching of the residual color. However, this process produced trihalomethanes well in excess of the current maximum contaminant levels. Four alternative treatments were tested: enhanced coagulation, ozonation, membrane filtration, and granular activated carbon adsorption. Each test and its results are briefly described; results are also presented graphically.
