One of the objectives of this study was to develop an experimental design that would enable evaluation of two scaling procedures (for rapid small-scale column testing) under conditions where feed flow rate and influent concentrations are well controlled. The second objective was to observe the impact of the presence of molecular oxygen on adsorber performance and scale-up. Rapid small-scale column tests conducted in accordance with the assumption that surface diffusivity does not depend on the carbon particle were very successful in predicting the performance of large GAD adsorbers under both oxic and anoxic conditions. A RSSCT design based on the assumption of a linear relationship between intraparticle diffusivity and particle size predicted slower breakthrough of all the compounds used in this study than the breakthrough patterns observed for the large column experiments. The presence of molecular oxygen in the feed solution caused an increase in the adsorptive capacity of BAD for NOM and, therefore, delayed breakthrough of NOM was observed.
