This paper concentrates on the H2O2/UV oxidation process, which involves the photolysis of hydrogen peroxide by ultraviolet light, leading to the formation of OH*. A mechanistic model of the process is proposed and is transformed into a set of mathematical equations applicable for a Continuous Flow Stirred-Tank Reactor (CSTR). The model is then analyzed for its sensitivity for the process and water quality parameters. Furthermore, the H2O2/UV process is investigated experimentally in a bench-scale CSTR by using butyl chloride as a probe compound for radical reactions. The proposed kinetic model and the experimental observations provide a comprehensive understanding of the effects of the process parameters and water characteristics on the process efficiency. The prediction of the model and the experimental data are generally in good agreement. Additional studies are being performed for quantitative verification of the model.
