This paper offers an overview of the many uses of ozone in drinking water treatment. Besides being perhaps the most potent disinfectant, ozone can provide a myriad of other benefits ranging from coagulant aid to an oxidizer of iron, manganese, and micropollutants. The dosages required and molecular form (i.e., molecular ozone versus hydroxyl radical) often conflict for different process needs, and therefore each water has to be evaluated to determine the impact of raw water quality (e.g., pH, alkalinity, bromide) on ozone demand and byproduct formation.
