This paper addresses process design issues associated with the use of ozone for disinfection and oxidation. In offering this overview, the following questions are considered: what is the principal purpose of using ozone for a given installation? What ozone dose should be applied? How does source water quality influence ozone dose and effectiveness? Where in the treatment train should ozone be applied? Is the application compatible with water treatment objectives? What is the impact of ozone application on the performance of other downstream treatment units and on finished water quality? These and other considerations are discussed, followed by specific recommendations for pilot-scale evaluation of ozonation from which appropriate process design information can be obtained are presented.
