The City of Venice is located in southwest Florida on the Gulf of Mexico. Because the area receives an annual average rainfall of 55 inches and is surrounded by creeks, lakes and wetlands, the critical nature of potable water supplies is not immediately apparent. However, the effects of an expanding population on the regional hydrogeology have resulted in increasingly stringent water restrictions. Concurrent with water supply issues, an economical, environmentally acceptable means of wastewater effluent disposal was becoming difficult to identify. The combination of potable water shortages and limits on effluent disposal have made the beneficial reuse of wastewater effluent the obvious solution. By providing reclaimed water for urban irrigation, demands on potable water sources may be reduced by an estimated 20 percent. This paper provides an overview of the master plan prepared to develop and implement the City of Venice's urban reuse program. Information on water rates for reused water is given.
