One of the last steps in the preliminary design of a water treatment plant (WTP) is to develop the plant layout. By this stage of the design process, the site has been selected, the treatment processes identified, and the approximate dimensions of the process units have normally been established. The engineer then faces the task of arranging the process units on the site. There are a number of alternative basic plant layouts. The particular plant layout selected can have a significant impact on construction cost, hydraulics, plant performance, operation and maintenance (O&M), and ease of expansion. This paper describes a compact water treatment plant layout which has been found to simplify O&M activities and minimize construction cost.
