Designing wells for to be used for both production and recharge presents the greatest opportunity to maximize well construction and aquifer characteristics as optimum costs. Pumping from the groundwater system and artificial recharge to the same system are diametrically opposite processes. The first lowers the water table and the second raises it. The response of the groundwater system to those processes is controlled by the degree of homogeneity and isostasy of the system. Well construction parameters induce an additional measure of control upon the natural ground-water system which further impacts the response of the system to pumping and recharge.
